Why Nyne? Why not. I started Nyne Partners out of necessity. Personal need and market need. It’s a good story so let me back up a bit.
I graduated from Creighton School of Law in 2008 with the undefined hope of doing something meaningful in law (don’t we all?). I spent time practicing health law, both in private practice and in-house. Liked it, didn’t love it. When I moved to Minneapolis to be close to family and pursue another non-legal opportunity (more on that later), I took on a “temporary” role in a recruiting firm for legal positions. I quickly learned to love the interaction and found myself engaged in a profession that was nowhere near what I had anticipated, but as it turns out, was well suited for and if I may say, pretty good at.
It is here, in a practice that I began to enjoy, that I started to see how people love what they do but dislike who they are doing it for. And dislike may not even be the right word. Disagree, despise, disrespect might be closer to the point. I worked for a large national recruiting firm where quantity of telephone calls, number of client drinks, and effort sharing was the measure of success. There was little discussion about finding quality candidates; there was a tremendous amount of discussion around quantity of candidates. Confidentiality was lacking, integrity of the practice was waning, and morale of the office was declining.
It was an environment that I could not handle and in the end, could not handle me. Thankfully, the correction came in 2016. I had a vision for recruiting and it had different metrics than what I experienced at my previous firm. Integrity, confidentiality, loyalty and high quality candidates were paramount. Clients would come for those reasons alone. I founded Nyne Partners in June of 2016 based on these simple principles. Nyne is not a fly-by-night operations system based on sheer volume. My focus is on carefully and contemplatively finding the right candidates, spending time with them and respecting them as fellow attorneys, and then connecting them with the firm(s) that deem a fit. It’s like matchmaking with a more professional edge. Time is valued. Confidentiality is upheld. Relationships are fostered and lasting. I love people, and I love making them happy. And that makes me happy. I’d love to have you join Nyne on this journey.
Oh, and FYI….Nyne is derived from combining the first two letters of my maiden last name, Nyhus, with the first two letters of my married last name, Nelson. It’s as cool as that.
